Support Mountain Biking In The Middlesex Fells

As we reported last February, the Department of Conservation and Recreation is conducting a planning process for the Middlesex Fells Reservation. The draft plan is now available for comment until November 19, 2010. (Download draft plan)

MassBike supports the efforts of the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) to expand opportunities for mountain biking in the Fells while increasing their already substantial stewardship of the park and making the trails more sustainable for all users. NEMBA is asking interested bicyclists to submit comments on the draft plan. See NEMBA's update on the process here.

See And Be Seen: Get Some Lights!

I noticed a lot of people riding after dark last night without lights, so it seemed like a good time for our annual Fall reminder about bike lights. There is no debate about this - you need lights when riding at night - so the only thing you should be thinking about is which ones to get. There are more light choices than ever, some simple and utilitarian, others incredibly high-tech and blindingly bright, and still others with a more artistic side.

For more info and a good read, check out our previous posts about lights, visibility, and the law:

Ride the Dusk Bike Ride to Support Friends of Alewife Reservation!

Friends of the Alewife Reservation invites you to our Dusk Bike Ride around the Alewife Reservation on October 21st at 5 PM (walkers are welcome too!). Taking advantage of the Belmont-Cambridge bike path, we’ll stop by the Silver Maple Forest for a walk with noted Edible Plant Specialist David Craft and then continue on to a nearby Alewife restaurant, were a nourishing meal will await our noble riders!

The ride will go to benefit our continued struggle to keep our urban wild safe. We ask that riders raise $100 (or the best you can) in support of their ride around our embattled landscape. You’ll find a map, directions, and sponsor forms online at www.friendsofalewifereservation.org.

Friends of Alewife Reservation stewards and educates about the Alewife Reservation, with protected land in Belmont, Arlington, Cambridge, and Somerville. FAR has been advocating for many years to preserve this unique urban wild in the Boston area

At present, we must try to keep the core buffer of the ecosystem together - the 7-acre silver maple forest. Development is pressing harshly on everyone to commence with its destruction. We have staved off the brutal clear-cutting of thousands of trees in the forest, but this time, we are unsure of the outcome. The courtroom process continues with our attorney and the Belmont Conservation Commission until January, but Belmont Community Development is poised to give a clear-cut permit any day now.

Conservation, though, isn’t just a matter for the courts – the continued existence of our ‘true urban wild’ depends on your engagement with the land! Your support through riding makes a big difference in protecting the Alewife Reservation.

We look forward to meeting more bikers as present supporters of the ecology at Alewife, and as future stewards of the Alewife urban wild. We welcome you to this truly unique property.

If unable to attend, beginning Wednesdays, Oct. 20th, we will meet at Route 2/16 at 5:30 to do a visibility action where traffic and flooding will increase. See FAR website for more information.

Friends of Alewife Reservation participates in MassBike's Charity Ride Partner Program to help support MassBike's advocacy and education programs.

Longfellow Bridge Public Meeting This Wednesday!

Want to find out what the Longfellow Bridge Task Force has been doing since MassDOT gave us the opportunity for more public input into the reconstruction of the Longfellow Bridge? How about speaking up for improving bicyclist access and safety getting on, crossing, and getting off the Longfellow Bridge between Boston and Cambridge? Then you need to come to the public meeting this Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm at the Shriners Hospital Auditorium at 51 Blossom Street, Boston.

The Task Force will present design concepts currently under consideration, including concepts for crossing the bridge by bike, on foot, and by car; for the approaches/intersections at either end of the bridge; and for better connections from the bridge to the Esplanade on the Boston side and to the parkland and paths on the Cambridge side.

This is the one-and-only opportunity for the general public to comment on the design concepts before the Task Force completes its work and submits its recommendations to MassDOT. The concepts represent a range of bicycle facilities from bike lanes similar to what exists now to some much larger and truly innovative ideas. The Task Force wants your comments, and we need your support to make sure that bicyclist (and pedestrian) interests are fairly balanced in this immensely complicated project.

For more information, visit the Task Force Google Group.

I am scheduled to present the bicyclist point-of-view during the meeting, so see you there!

Volunteers Needed for the MassBike Affair

We'll be hosting our first ever MassBike Affair Casino Night and Fashion Show and we need your help! We need plenty of volunteers to help make this night a success. Volunteers have the good feeling of knowing that they are helping their state-wide bicycle advocacy group, PLUS they also get in for free and get dinner and a drink on us!

We need volunteers to help with all kinds of things, from working casino tables, to help with bike valet, to work at the door. For those volunteers working tables there will be an hour-long training before the event, so even if you aren't familiar with casino games you can still help out.

We also need volunteers strut their stuff on the catwalk for our fashion show or to help out behind the scenes.

All volunteers get into the event for free and we'll provide dinner and a drink on us.

The event is located at The Greatest Bar and volunteer opportunities go from 5-10pm (volunteering will be in shifts, so if you can only help with part of the event, just mention it in your email).

If you would like to volunteer or are interested but need more details, please email volunteer@massbike.org.

Thanks for your support!
