Bringing Kittie Knox’s Legacy to the Stage – Support the Kittie Knox Plays!
In the 1890s, a young biracial cyclist named Kittie Knox shattered the barriers of her time. She challenged racial discrimination, defied gender norms, and became a symbol of resistance in an era when Black advancement faced intense opposition. Her story is one of courage, resilience, and determination—a story that needs to be told.
That’s why MassBike is partnering with Plays in Place to support the creation of The Kittie Knox Plays, a series of one-act plays that bring Kittie’s remarkable journey to life. These plays will not only celebrate her legacy but also serve as a vehicle for reflection on the ongoing struggles for racial and gender equality today.
The plays will be performed in Greater Boston and Martha’s Vineyard, with audiences moving from play to play within large parks, guided by the production team. Imagine watching Kittie’s story unfold in the very settings where history was made—this is more than just theater; it’s an immersive experience that connects past and present.
Talented playwrights Kirsten Greenidge, Claire Gardener, and Patrick Gabridge, are currently hard at work crafting the scripts. Director Michelle Aguillon is leading the way through the workshopping process.
But we can’t do it alone.
The initial funding from The Boston Foundation and the Solomon Foundation has allowed Plays in Place to begin this important work, but we need your help to bring The Kittie Knox Plays to full production. Your tax-deductible donation will go directly to supporting the commission, development, and production of these plays.
Imagine these plays being performed across the country by schools, colleges, community theater groups, and cycling clubs. Imagine the impact of Kittie’s story reaching new audiences, inspiring change, and sparking conversations about equality and justice.
With your support, we can make this vision a reality.
Donate today to help us share Kittie Knox’s story with the world. Together, we can honor her legacy and continue the fight for the values she stood for.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
