Fred McIver

I have had my butt on a bike seat seat since I was 6, and continue to ride, mostly in Massachusetts, and I will be 63 in a month.  I have been an advocate for bicycling access and bike safety since I was at UMass Amherst as a student in the late '70s and was a founding member of both the Greenfield (MA) and Franklin County (MA) Bikeway Committees. Riders need to stick together and continue to advocate for safety laws, bikeways, bike parking for commuters, etc.

I am also the chair of the Hannah Frilot Memorial Scholarship Fund at UMass Amherst.  This scholarship is in loving memory of one of our students who was killed by a tired driver while Hannah walked her bike home in the bike lane, only a few hundred feet from her destination in 2014.  Last summer, my cousin's son, a former Ironman competitor, was run over by a young driver texting and turning at the same time.  These personal events are my motivation to do more for those of us who ride.  If you would like to know more about our memorial scholarship, please go to https://www.umass.edu/it/about/hannah-frilot-memorial-scholarship.

Thanks for caring,
Fred
