Mass Central Rail Trail Inaugural Test Ride: Bicycles Reviving a Historic Cross-State Corridor
This September, history, and progress will collide as bicycles take over the old rail lines once traveled by trains. The Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT) Coalition is gearing up for an inaugural test ride of the trail, happening from September 20th through 22nd. Spanning across 26 communities from Northampton to Boston, this three-day event celebrates the rebirth of the state’s longest trail corridor.
Ninety years ago, this cross-state train link was severed by a hurricane; this year, it's being restored by bicycles. This year, Ambassador Riders from the MCRT Coalition, including MassBike's own Jes Slavin, will explore this route to assess the trail’s conditions and identify the critical gaps in need of development.
A Ride of Discovery and Progress
From Northampton to Boston, the Ambassador Riders will traverse over 100 miles, from scenic countryside to urban centers. This ride isn’t just about cycling; it’s about conversation. Over three days, they will stop at key locations where local officials and trail advocates will highlight the economic, health, and environmental benefits a completed trail will bring to the state.
Public Involvement
Though only a few riders can participate in the full end-to-end journey this year, the public is invited to attend several information stops along the way. Come meet the riders, learn about the Mass Central Rail Trail’s development, and show your support by joining the conversation.
