Event Recap: 2024 George Street Bike Challenge for Major Taylor

On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the Major Taylor Association hosted their annual George Street Bike Challenge for Major Taylor. The daunting George Street hill was one of the former training grounds of world champion bicycle racer Marshall "Major" Taylor. The "Worcester Whirlwind," as he was known was the world's first Black sports superstar. Taylor was world cycling champion in 1899, American sprint champion in 1900, and set numerous track cycling records.
Each year the Major Taylor Association hosts this hill climb in his honor to raise funds to help spread the word about Major Taylor and his accomplishments. This year, ninety riders joined the race against the clock up the 500-foot climb, with an average gradient of 18%.
MassBike Communications Director, Jes Slavin, joined the fun and raced to support the Major Taylor Association. Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission (CMRPC) Associate Planner, Gabe Trevor, also participated in the event.
At the top of the climb, Worcester Program Manager, Alex Salcedo, helped with recording times. CMRPC Public Outreach Coordinator/Assistant Planner and Worcester Earn-A-Bike Board Member, Nate Lewis, staffed our informational table and chatted with spectators and participants alike. You can view a video from the event on our Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube.
The George Street Bike Challenge for Major Taylor is a highlight every July and we look forward to next year's event!
