Beat the Heat: Summer Biking Tips for a Cool Ride

Summer is the perfect time to hit the trails or roads on your bike, but as temperatures rise, so do the challenges. While the weather in Massachusetts has been consistently "a scorcher," we don't want you to miss out on some summertime miles! Here are some essential tips to ensure your biking adventures stay cool and enjoyable even in the heat:

1. Stay Hydrated: The key to a successful summer ride is hydration. Make sure to bring plenty of water and plan your route around places where you can refill your bottles. Staying hydrated not only keeps you cool but also helps prevent heat-related illnesses. Pro tip: fill a bottle about halfway full the night before and put it in your freezer at a slight angle, in the morning fill it up the rest of the way and you'll have ice-cold water for your ride!

2. Beat the Heat By Riding Early: Plan your rides for the cooler parts of the day and take advantage of places where you can experience low traffic in the early morning. For example, at Mount Tom in Holyoke, the auto road doesn't open to cars until 8:00 am, so you can enjoy a car-free climb and cooler temperatures by going early.

3. Wear Sun Protection: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen throughout your ride, especially if it's long or you're sweating a lot.

4. Plan Cool Stops: Design your route to include stops at swim spots, ice cream shops, or general stores where you can take a break and cool down. A quick dip or a cold drink can make a big difference in regulating your body temperature.

5. Optimize Your Gear: Avoid overheating by using bike bags or a rack instead of wearing a backpack. This allows for better airflow and reduces sweat buildup. Don't forget to wear moisture-wicking clothing that keeps you dry and comfortable.

6. Protect Your Eyes: Sunglasses aren't just a fashion statement—they protect your eyes from UV rays, wind, and debris. Consider wearing a cycling hat to shield your face from the sun and help manage sweat.

7. Dress Smart: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from moisture-wicking materials or summer-weight cycling jerseys made for the heat. Avoid cotton, as it can trap sweat and make you feel hotter. Opt for clothing that allows airflow and helps you stay cool throughout your ride.

With these tips in mind, we hope you can tackle summer biking adventures while staying cool, comfortable, and safe. Enjoy the ride and make the most of the sunny season on your bike!
