Guest Story: Finding Confidence on Two Wheels at Worcester Bike Party

This past weekend, MassBike partnered with Worcester Bike Party to provide free bike lights to riders, helping make evening rides safer and more visible.

The following day, party member Aidan Gormley sent us a thoughtful message. Along with thanking us for the lights, he shared this reflection, written by partygoer Adri Pray, who joined the ride.

With Aidan and Adri's permission, we're happy to share her experience below.

The idea of riding a bike through the city of Worcester at night sounds daunting, but in practice, and with a community, it can actually feel like a party.

Having not touched a bike in years, I decided to join Worcester Bike Party's first ride of the season because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something I otherwise wouldn't have done by myself. At first, I was nervous and intimidated to ride in the streets, but that fear melted away after I saw how many people felt passionately about sharing the road, and after I was given free lights for my bike that made me feel safe.

I stayed close to the sidewalk while I got comfortable and was easily able to keep up with the party's leisurely pace that made it a really enjoyable experience. Cars that passed our group were friendly; drivers could clearly see the white and red flashing lights attached to each bike, and the size of our group—which included toddlers, teenagers, and adults—made my confidence grow mile-by-mile. By the end of the ride, I felt secure in my ability to pedal through Worcester.

The lights, and the event, illuminated a safe, community-oriented path forward for both experienced and casual riders alike. That, along with the people who rode with me, showed me that cycling across Worcester is a sustainable, efficient, and fun way for everyone to get around.

Anyone who's curious about their community should come out to Worcester Bike Party's next event on July 31.

A heartfelt thank-you to Aidan for following up with us and to Adri for sharing her experience. Stories like this remind us that creating welcoming, safe opportunities to ride can help more people discover the joy and freedom of bicycling.
