Lighting the Way: A Year of Volunteer Impact with MassBike

As we approach the winter solstice—the darkest day of the year—I’ve been reflecting on the incredible work we’ve accomplished together in 2024. The work of our volunteers has been at the heart of everything we do at MassBike, and it’s been inspiring to see so many of you light the way for safer cycling across Massachusetts.

In my role as MassBike’s Administrative Coordinator, I had the honor of working alongside dedicated volunteers who helped us achieve new heights this year. Whether through our Lights Brigade program or by supporting us at large community events, you’ve all helped us create a brighter, safer future for cyclists in our state.

Volunteer Engagement in 2024

One of my top priorities this year was keeping our volunteers connected with MassBike’s mission through regular, hands-on opportunities. In 2024, we organized at least one volunteer opportunity each month—sometimes more! These events ranged from prepping bike lights at our office to volunteering at large-scale community events like the Minuteman Block Party and Somerville’s Fluff Fest. Thanks to the enthusiasm of 89 volunteers, we were able to show up and serve our communities at every turn.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness how these events brought together both new and returning volunteers, eager to contribute in meaningful ways. Looking forward to 2025, I’m excited about expanding our volunteer efforts even further, working alongside other local organizations doing similar work, and amplifying our coalition’s impact.

A Year of Lights Brigade Success

The Lights Brigade program has been a highlight for many of our volunteers, and I’m proud to say that in 2024, we distributed over 1,300 bike lights through this program. This effort was made possible by the dedication of 60 lead volunteers who helped distribute lights at holiday tree lightings, community nighttime rides, office gatherings, and more. It’s been heartwarming to see the creativity and enthusiasm that our volunteers have brought to these events, truly embodying our mission to make traveling by bicycle safer and more accessible.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we head into 2025, I’m excited to continue growing our volunteer program and bringing our volunteers into even more community events and partnerships. There are so many local organizations with shared goals, and I’m eager to expand our network and build stronger connections that will amplify the work we’re doing together.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our amazing volunteers. If you’re interested in getting involved in the new year, make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter to learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities. Together, we’ll continue to push for safer streets and brighter paths for cyclists across Massachusetts. My hope is that by providing more volunteer opportunities, folks all over Massachusetts will feel that contributing to our work is within reach.

How You Can Help

As we reflect on our successes and look ahead to the future, we also ask for your support. Year-end donations help fund our programs and ensure that we can continue creating opportunities for volunteers to make a difference in their communities.

Every dollar you give supports the Lights Brigade, advocacy efforts, and volunteer programs that help us build a more vibrant, safe, and engaged cycling community.

You can make a year-end gift to MassBike today and help us continue the work we’ve started—and light the way into 2025!

Give Now

Thank you to our volunteers and supporters for your unwavering commitment to cycling safety in Massachusetts. Together, we’re making a difference, and we can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve in the new year.

With gratitude,
Emma
