ValleyBike Returns to the Connecticut River Valley
Bike share is back in the Connecticut River Valley! On Monday, August 12, 2024, ValleyBike officially re-launched thanks to a new partnership with Drop Mobility.
VallyBike will now operate a mix of the original Bewegen electric bicycles and new lightweight Drop Mobility e-bikes. The new Drop Mobility e-bikes will all start in Springfield and won’t utilize the current docking stations. Instead, bike racks will be set up as “docks” for riders to lock the e-bikes to at the end of their trip. All riders will now be required to take a photo of their docked bike at the conclusion of their trip, no matter which type of e-bike they use.
The City of Northampton hosted a launch event in Pulaski Park, which featured remarks from Northampton Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra, Northampton Director of Planning and Sustainability Carolyn Misch, and Chicopee Mayor John L. Vieau. Local bicycling advocates and bike share supporters joined to celebrate the re-launch and test out the new Drop Mobility e-bikes. Drop Mobility provided free helmets to attendees and hands-on instruction on how to use their e-bikes.
After sharing their commitment to bike share and micromobility in the valley, Mayor Sciarra and Mayor Vieau took a ride on the new Drop Mobility e-bikes. Both seemed impressed with the new e-bikes and are excited to have this micromobility option available again in their communities.
Since the new e-bikes won’t use the old docking stations, Springfield’s stations will be relocated to other communities over time. A timeline for the station relocation process or new station locations has not been released.
