2021 MassBike Annual Meeting Recap

Ricardo Morales, Pittsfield Commissioner of Public Utilities

Majorie Cohan of the Berkshire Bike Path Council introduced our first keynote of the evening Ricardo Morales, Pittsfield's Commissionor of Public Utilities. Ricardo discussed his planning philosophy and how he is working with the City of Pittsfield to help make it more bike-friendly. 

 

 

Mayor Joshua Garcia, Holyoke

Introduced by MassBike Connecticut River Valley President, Kristen Sykes, and Shannon Bliven of Valley Bike, Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia detailed his work to bring ValleyBike to the Connecticut River Valley and his commitment to making Holyoke more bike-friendly.

 

 

Alex Morse, Provincetown Town Manager

In 2021, Provincetown was named the #1 Small City for Bicycling by People for Bikes City Ratings and #4 City Overall. Alex Morse, Provincetown Town Manager, discussed the ways that the city has invested in a more bike-friendly community and their impact.

 

 

Shannon Bliven, ValleyBike bike share presentation

Shannon Bliven talked about how ValleyBike is making it easier for folks get around the Connecticut River Valley with docked e-bike share system. ValleyBike can be found in 8 communities throughout the valley: Amherst, Chicopee, Easthampton, Holyoke, Northampton, South Hadley, Springfield, & West Springfield.

 

 

UMass Undergraduate Student Presentation "Access to Trails and Active Transportation in Springfield, MA"

Accessibility has been an issue with the Connecticut Riverwalk and Bikeway since its completion in 2003. A team of four undergraduate design students, we have spent the fall creating a comprehensive research study on the trail designing better connections between this Springfield, MA rail trail and the local environmental justice communities it is meant to serve. MassBike 2021 Highlights

MassBike Executive Director, Galen Mook, went through some of MassBike's 2021 highlights, which included some of our advocacy, education, and legislative work.

 

 

2021 MassBike Advocate of the Year

MassBike Connecticut River Valley Chapter President Kristen Sykes introduced our 2021 MassBike Advocate of the Year, Shannon Bliven.

 

 

2021 Bike Friendly Business of the Year

Galen Mook introduced our Bike Friendly Business of the Year- MathWorks. Eric Sofen of MathWorks outlined the ways the company encourages employees to bicycle- including a campus bike share system. MathWorks is currently a Silver designated Bicycle-Friendly Business from the League of American Bicyclists. 

 

 

2021 Intern Highlight

In 2021, MassBike worked with two interns, Noah Rowan and Petru Sofio, who each oversaw impactful advocacy projects. Noah Rowan built The 105 Report to analyze fatal crashes over the past decade. Petru Sofio advocated for the Appleton & Mass Ave Redesign and suggested improvements that were included in the final design.

 

 

MassBike 2022 Forecast

Galen discussed some of MassBike's plans for 2022 and some key "save the dates" for the year.
