Ride the Dusk Bike Ride to Support Friends of Alewife Reservation!

Friends of the Alewife Reservation invites you to our Dusk Bike Ride around the Alewife Reservation on October 21st at 5 PM (walkers are welcome too!). Taking advantage of the Belmont-Cambridge bike path, we’ll stop by the Silver Maple Forest for a walk with noted Edible Plant Specialist David Craft and then continue on to a nearby Alewife restaurant, were a nourishing meal will await our noble riders!

The ride will go to benefit our continued struggle to keep our urban wild safe. We ask that riders raise $100 (or the best you can) in support of their ride around our embattled landscape. You’ll find a map, directions, and sponsor forms online at www.friendsofalewifereservation.org.

Friends of Alewife Reservation stewards and educates about the Alewife Reservation, with protected land in Belmont, Arlington, Cambridge, and Somerville. FAR has been advocating for many years to preserve this unique urban wild in the Boston area

At present, we must try to keep the core buffer of the ecosystem together - the 7-acre silver maple forest. Development is pressing harshly on everyone to commence with its destruction. We have staved off the brutal clear-cutting of thousands of trees in the forest, but this time, we are unsure of the outcome. The courtroom process continues with our attorney and the Belmont Conservation Commission until January, but Belmont Community Development is poised to give a clear-cut permit any day now.

Conservation, though, isn’t just a matter for the courts – the continued existence of our ‘true urban wild’ depends on your engagement with the land! Your support through riding makes a big difference in protecting the Alewife Reservation.

We look forward to meeting more bikers as present supporters of the ecology at Alewife, and as future stewards of the Alewife urban wild. We welcome you to this truly unique property.

If unable to attend, beginning Wednesdays, Oct. 20th, we will meet at Route 2/16 at 5:30 to do a visibility action where traffic and flooding will increase. See FAR website for more information.
