Introducing the Massachusetts Statewide Electric Bike Incentive Program
This Earth Month, Massachusetts is taking a significant stride towards sustainable and accessible transportation with the launch of the Massachusetts Statewide Electric Bike Incentive Program. Spearheaded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), this initiative aims to empower low- and moderate-income residents by making electric bicycles (e-bikes) more affordable than ever.
From Worcester's Success to Statewide Impact
Informed by the success of MassBike's Worcester E-Bike program and one of MassCEC's e-bike pilots, this new statewide initiative offers income-based vouchers of up to $1,200. These vouchers can be used towards the purchase of e-bikes, ensuring that more residents can access clean, efficient, and cost-effective transportation options.
How It Works
The program features two types of vouchers:
-
Enhanced Voucher: Up to $1,200 for applicants with incomes below 225% of the Federal Poverty Line or participants in qualifying programs.
-
Standard Voucher: Up to $800 for applicants with incomes at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Line or participants in qualifying programs.
In addition to these e-bike vouchers, participants will also receive up to $150 for safety gear and a bike pump, further supporting safe and enjoyable riding experiences.
Supporting Clean Energy Goals
Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rebecca Tepper highlighted the program's importance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, which is a significant contributor to environmental pollution in Massachusetts. By making electric transportation accessible to more residents, the state aims to build a cleaner energy future that benefits all communities.
Partnering for Success
The program's launch event at Landry’s Bicycles in Worcester featured remarks from key stakeholders, including Massachusetts Clean Energy Center's CEO, Dr. Emily Reichert, and Clean Transportation Director Rachel Ackerman, MassDOT Undersecretary Hayes Morrison, MassBike Worcester Program Manager Alex Salcedo, Landry's Worcester Manager Greg Affsa, and MassBike E-Bike Program Phase I participant, Julie Holy.
How to Apply
Massachusetts residents can now apply for vouchers through MassCEC's website during designated application periods. Approximately 3,000 vouchers will be awarded on a monthly basis from April to September, with applicants selected through a random process.
